ArtSpace is a mobile app for art galleries, which gives visitors a chance to connect to the paintings with a greater understanding. The app helps users learn more about an artwork or an artist with the help of a QR scanner. It also helps users book tickets for their art gallery visit to avoid the hassle of long queues at ticket counters.

Problem Statement

People who visit art galleries often find it difficult to identify artworks or find information about the artwork or artist. When art galleries are too busy, visitors don’t get enough time to read through the information displayed near the artwork. This results in visitors not having a good time, and hence, them leaving the art galleries frustrated.

With the data collected from the interviews, two groups of users were identified. One primary user group identified were art enthusiasts and people with an art background. The other user group identified were people who did not have any knowledge or understanding about art.

I created personas representing both the ideal users of the application. The personas helped me arrive at better solutions as it gave an in-depth understanding of the user goals and frustrations and the overall personality.

Once the flow diagram was established, I started sketching low-fidelity wireframes of the user flow using pen and paper. Iterations of each screen of the app on paper ensured that the elements that made it to the digital wireframes would be well-suited to address user pain points. It allowed me to quickly validate individual design decisions.

I created a lo-fi prototype to test on a couple of users. I made a research plan, where I outlined the research goals, listed questions to be asked, methodology, information about the participants, and a script with tasks to complete.

After collecting insights from participants, I made an affinity diagram to seek for a pattern in the participants; behavior and their frustrations while going through the prototype.

I did another round of usability testing once the hi-fi prototype was ready. I tested the prototype with 5 users to see how user friendly the application is. The participants were able to navigate through the app fairly easily.

My Learnings

  • This was the first design project I worked on as part of the Google UX Design Certification. The whole journey was exciting and helped me learn a lot of important lessons.

  • Through this experience, I gained hands-on experience on how the design process is and what are the steps ideally followed. It gave me a good foundation on the basics of ideation, research, prototyping, and iteration. Moreover, it has fostered a mindset of continuous learning and improvement.

  • Although the usability testing was done with a limited number of people, it was definitely beneficial and helped in improving the end result of the product. This taught me how important a usability test can be to create a successful product in the market.
